IS WATER RATIONING COMING TO CUPERTINO?

On Tuesday the East Bay went into water rationing mode due to California's water shortage. Single family's have been told they must cut their water use by a whopping 19%. When will it be our turn, and how will our City Council react? Presently, Santa Clara County is asking residents here to voluntarily cut water usage by 10%. To quote one resident, "So, will the City Council still approve the development of housing while were in the middle of water rationing?" Good question.

EDITORIAL

DOMINIC CASERTA, CANDIDATE FOR 22nd ASSEMBLY DISTRICT

Character assassination, while hiding behind the mantle of "journalism" is a tactic used by writers who are full of themselves (and other things) to promote their often little researched notions, and usually contains little fact. It most often happens when writers put themselves on the pedestal of a bully pulpit to further the candidacy of a candidate they back--or to simply look smart.

HOW TO CAST YOUR VOTE IN THIS VERY CONFUSING ELECTION

California had an early Primary Election this year, the premise being that California's Primary "would count more, and California would be noticed" well, it did, but we weren't. That's why the upcoming election on June 3rd, in which we will cast the current ballots we either received in the mail or will get at the polls is still considered a "Primary" election, even though we already had a "Primary". Now they tell us the January election was a "Special Primary Election" (even if we no longer think it was all that special) and confusion abounds.

Lawson Middle School teams excelled in Destination Imagination State Finals in Elk Grove on April 5, 2008

Epic_di_state_champ_08_021_2By Helam Luk

On Saturday, April 5th, the "Lawson EPIC Team" (EPIC = Every Person Is Creative) won the Destination Imagination California State Championship (middle schools) under the "Obstacles, Of Course" category in Sacramento. The Lawson EPIC Team consists of five team members (Austin Chen, Gene Hua, Lawrence Luk, Normand Overney, Maxwell Ruckstuhl) with Helam Luk as their team manager. This is a student-driven project where the team members worked collaboratively to create a theme that goes along with a vehicle navigating an obstacle course. The team created the skit, props, vehicle, and obstacle course needed to bring "The Greening" theme to life. For the team, the journey itself has been more valuable than winning. Throughout these past few months, the team has learned valuable life lessons on teamwork, individual contribution, creativity, critical thinking and technical skills. The Lawson EPIC Team has been invited to represent the state of California at the Global Finals to be held in May at the University of Tennessee.

Img_3916coastlinehoriz8x5372Oxnard: The Next Ventura?

Story and Photos by Mary McGrath

For many years, Oxnard was one of those requisite stops between LA and Santa Barbara. I could always count on a cheap diner for refueling and regeneration, before plowing onward into Ventura, Santa Barbara or Montecito.

Oxnard is now it’s own destination. After some prowling, I’ve discovered that Oxnard has its own story to tell. Although still developing compared to more populated tourist destinations, it’s only a matter of time before Oxnard catches on, and gentrification charms another seaside community.

PANERA BREAD

by Gloria Elle'

My family first discovered Panera Bread on the Westside of Los Angeles. When we saw the sign go up announcing Panera Bread would soon open, we thought it was odd to have such a large store for a bakery, especially since bakeries in that area are plentiful and all of them bake break along with all the goodies. The extended neighborhood has ethnic deli/bakeries as well: Italian, Mexican, Jewish--so we were a tad puzzled. When Panera finally opened we could definitely see the difference. It wasn't just a bakery also offering a few extras like coffee and a sandwich or two. It was a restaurant with a bakery. it was love at first taste

Hope Begins in the Dark: 50 Lymphoma Survivors Tell Their Exclusive Life Stories

Booksmtilt

Jamie Reno is the most talented person I have ever met. An investigative journalist for Newsweek who has written for the most prestigious magazines and newspapers in the US; columnist for California Tour & Travel Magazine, gifted musician, loving husband and father, good friend--and cancer survivor. And, he managed to squeeze all this while in the prime of his life, while he was still in his twenties. Jamie's many accomplishments paled in comparison when, on that fateful day a little more than ten years ago he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. A death sentence. After miraculously surviving--with the miracle of experimental drugs, the love of his family and the prayers of all those who knew him, Jamie survived and overcame all the adversity. Now he gives back. Through his music, through his writing of this book, and through his amazing passion to eradicate cancer.  Hope Begins In The Dark is a must read for those who have cancer, anyone who has survived this insidious disease and we dreamers who know that miracles can and do happen. - Ruby Elbogen
